Endocrine pathologies

January 27, 2010

Learning about the endocrine system was very beneficial to me because many of the physical symptoms of endocrine problems have always come across to me as normal, or I excuse the way certain people look as just being the way they were born, but little did I know, those were symptoms of deeper problems in their bodies. It was a big shock to me to find out different problems that people have that you would never know about because you would excuse it for different average things.

Nervous Pathologies

January 27, 2010

Nerves are very important to pay attention too, not only can it make the experience of a massage for a client very uncomfortable and possibly painful to where you can loose clients but you could seriously damage someone if you are not careful and pay attention to specific clients problems and medical background that they communicate with you, and have filled out on their client intake form. My father has a lot of different nerve problems that have just come on with different problems in his life that even he forgets about so its always important to be sensitive to the clients body and take every new area with caution.

Musculoskeletal pathologies

January 27, 2010

Review of Mosby’s Pathology for Massage Therapists, by Salvo and Anderson.

I feel this chapter is a very strong part of why massage therapists are needed in the world. So many people have muscular and skeletal problems, many are obvious and many are not obvious until you put your hands on a client or see a part of the clients body. Knowledge of the different types of problems that effect the muscles and bones is very important to have, there are a lot of different materials that were briefly talked about in this chapter that I need to look more into so I can talk to the clients and understand what they have or can direct them in the correct way to help their bodies.

Dermitalogical Pathologies

January 27, 2010

Recently I was interning at my massage school and a client that I had was an older lady and she had some "age spots" which looked like big moles that were raised and rough looking like a scab. She told me about the "age spots" before I massaged her which is always appreciated when the client lets you know, because if she hadn’t told me that the "age spots" were perfectly fine for me to massage over, I would have avoided them because they looked like scabs. This is a perfect example of how much easier it makes it to just communicate with your client, because some clients won’t tell you about certain things because they forget or are embarrassed.

Client Intake and assessment

January 27, 2010

As a student I have not made my own client intake form, I do have a couple of example forms, but it is very important that I look over those example client intake forms and create one of my own. Client intake forms are one of the most important things to have filled out before you put your hands on a client. I even think it is very important to have your clients update their intake forms every once in a while so you can update any changes in their health and medications in writing. Clients will tell you and update you but it is very important to have it on file so you can review their health to better serve them with their massage needs.

Disease awareness

January 27, 2010

Disease’s on the skin and nails is what I am most concerned about as a therapist. Sometimes you can’t see certain diseases on the skin right away or on a nail if the client is laying in a way where the infected area is not visible. I sometimes catch myself while massaging clients realizing that I went on and massaged a part of the body without scanning the area. That is what I am most worried about when dealing with different diseases and making sure that I know what to look for and make sure that I constantly scan the different bodies that I work on.
