Cancer and Massage

August 24, 2011

I am one of the therapists who use to be fearful of working with cancer clients. Since I took Dr. Johnson’s online course, I am no longer afraid. I realized other therapists, clients, family members, and healthcare professionals had a fear of cancer clients taking massage therapy.

I learned that massage actually benefits cancer client. We as therapist can teach family members some basic techniques and this helps them with their fears and assist them in providing compassion to their loved one.

We can also teach clients to feel better with self-massage.

Finally, a big shock to me was that we can teach healthcare professional about the benefits of massage. And thereby allow prescriptions for massage clients.

In our class, we used Mosby’s Pathology for Massage Therapist by Susan G. Salvo.

Knots in my back

August 12, 2011

I am glad the therapist help me to reduced the knots in my lower back. I had been lifting heavy loads on at work. Walking was painful for me, which lead me to lean toward one side. My colleagues at work noticed my pain and leaning. The therapist had me to push with my legs. Immediately I felt some of the pain going way. The therapist also gave me a massage. This also helped a lot. This is my experience with getting relief from the painful knots in my back.

Child Abuse

August 5, 2011

Experts cannot agree on a single reason for this increase, but most attribute it to both a population increase and an increase in reporting. Other factors that are sometimes cited include changing a wider definition of child abuse, increased reporting requirements, states providing more accurate information, better recording systems, and changes in data collections.
It is estimated that about 906,000 children are victims of abuse & neglect every year. That estimate translates roughly to an astonishing rate of 12.3 children per 1,000 children. Of the victimized children, it is the ages 0-3 that are the most likely to experience abuse. About 1 in 50 U.S. infants are victims of nonfatal child abuse or neglect in a year, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. To further the shock, it is estimated that of these 1,500 abused and neglected children will result in death. That is just over 4 fatalities every day! The CDC goes onto report that 79% of the child mortality rate from abuse, are younger than 4 years of age.
As a psychologist who has worked with abused children, I can say that first and foremost, a child should never be flat-out confronted if you suspect abuse. This should be handled very delicately and the child should be approached gently, with all efforts being made to ensure the feeling of safety, security and trust. The child will most likely be frightened, embarrassed, ashamed, feeling guilty or conflicted and going through many emotions that are hard for them to handle.
If you suspect child abuse has occurred, you should contact the local child protection agency or police department. Now-a-day, there are many national organizations that you can call who will help guide you through. One organization is called Child Help USA and they have a hotline that is available 24 hours a day to offer assistance.
For the treatment of anxiety resulting from abuse and neglect, there are several roads you can choose from. Symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder may include restlessness, feeling tense or on edge, irritability, impatience, or poor concentration. People may also notice changes in their physical health such as headaches, jaw pain, muscle tension, difficulty falling or staying asleep (insomnia), dry mouth, fatigue, chest tightness, indigestion, bloating, excessive sweating, and headache. These are some of the natural remedies that are being explored for anxiety:
The herb passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) was used as a folk remedy for anxiety and insomnia. Side effects of passionflower may include nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and rapid heartbeat. The safety of passionflower in pregnant or nursing women, children, or people with kidney or liver disease has not been established.
Massage therapy, shiatsu, and other forms of bodywork are widely used to diminish muscle tension, relieve stress, and improve sleep.
Mind/body breathing exercises, physical exercise, yoga, tai chi, self-hypnosis, meditation, and biofeedback are just some of the stress reduction techniques used for anxiety.
GABA is an amino acid that is known to play a role in the physiology of anxiety. Some prescription drugs for anxiety work by affecting GABA receptors in the brain. The degree to which orally ingested GABA supplements can reach the brain, however, is unknown.
Plant essential oils can be added to baths, massage oil, or infusers. Essential oils that are used for anxiety and nervous tension are: bergamot, cypress, geranium, jasmine, lavender, melissa, neroli, rose, sandalwood, ylang-ylang. Lavender is the most common and forms the base of many relaxing blends.

Reduce our national debt by reducing the federal electronic medical records mandate, comment

July 29, 2011

As a full time massage therapist, I am seeing more people under stress because of the uncertainty of the USA budget, finances, credit, and inability to pay. These people under stress are ordinary citizens and politicians. My heart goes out to both groups of people.

I do not understand how the politicians and the President can force the health care industry to spend money on federally mandated electronic medical records. This sadness occurs especially when our US government is requiring specific types of overbearing electronic medical records and it cannot balance its own budget.

A fairytale Disney vacation for our princess

July 7, 2011

Guest post written by Mary Caldwell

To say that our daughter likes princesses would be a vast understatement. If we would let her, she would definitely just wear her princess dress-up outfits to school every day and even sleep in them. But we obviously make her wear regular clothes. I tell her that it wouldn’t be special if she wore them all of the time! Because of her love for princesses we thought that it would be neat to go to Walt Disney World for vacation this summer.

She’s never been and I haven’t been since I was a kid so I’m pretty excited about it. While I was looking up some information on that and deciding the actual dates for us to go, I saw the site mobilebroadband4G.com. I read through it and thought that would be a great service to have so I signed up for it.

We’ll of course have to make a visit to Cinderella’s castle, where you can apparently eat breakfast. I guess that we’ll let her wear her princess outfit to that. Besides, she will be in the company of another princess!

Aromatherapy, comment

June 23, 2011

Again Aromatherapy has wide variety of application it is easy and fairly acceptable to use in all kind of setting below research published in complementary and Alternative medicine is another good example of this wonderful and effective therapy we need to just remember that essential oils can be irritant to the skin when used in massage or bath tubs so make sure to use small amount at first and no more than2% of essential oil to the carrier oil.:

Abstract
Workplace stress-related illness is a serious issue, and consequently many stress reduction methods have been investigated. Aromatherapy is especially for populations that work under high stress. Elementary school teachers are a high-stress working population in Taiwan. In this study, fifty-four elementary school teachers were recruited to evaluate aromatherapy performance on stress reduction. Bergamot essential oil was used for aromatherapy spray for 10 minutes. Blood pressure and autonomic nervous system parameters were recorded 5 minutes before and after the application of the aroma spray. Results showed that there were significant decreases in blood pressure, heart rate, LF power percentage, and LF/HF while there were increases in heart rate variability and HF power percentage (P < .001(∗∗∗)) after application of the aromatherapy spray. Further analysis was investigated by dividing subjects into three background variables (position variables, age variables, gender variables) and anxiety degree groups. All parameters were significantly different for most subgroups, except for the substitute teachers and the light-anxiety group. Parasympathetic nervous system activation was measured after aromatherapy in this study. It encouraged further study for other stress working population by aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy, comment

June 22, 2011

Aromatherapy has been around for thousands of years as the tiny molecules of the essential oils enter the nose they travel after absorption in the mucus in to the blood stream and all over the body, and this research below is another indication of many use of aromatherapy:

Abstract
Objectives  To evaluate the effects of the aroma of essential oil of lavender against placebo on subjects’ pain perceptions and levels of anxiety when undergoing elective cosmetic facial injections of botulinum toxin type A (BOTOX(®) COSMETIC) for the correction of glabellar wrinkles. Methods  Subjects (N = 30) who had not previously received any cosmetic facial injections were randomized to essential oil of lavender aroma exposure or to placebo during elective cosmetic facial injections of BOTOX(®) (12 U) for the correction of glabellar wrinkles. Evaluations of subjects’ pain perceptions and levels of anxiety assessed by the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, heart rate (HR), and blood pressure (BP) measurements were taken at baseline, before, and after injections. Results  Subjects exposed to essential lavender oil showed a significant reduction in HR after the injection as compared to the pre-injection HR. Subjects exposed to the placebo did not show any significant difference in BP or HR between pre-injection and postinjection. Conclusions  Although essential oil of lavender did not have an effect on the subjects’ perception of pain during a facial injection, subjects showed significant increases in parasympathetic activity when exposed to the lavender aroma. Lavender aromatherapy has the potential to ease anxiety in patients undergoing minimally invasive facial cosmetic procedures.

There are many ways one can use the aroma therapy, it can be used by message in to the skin some times combining different oil depending what is the reason for therapy, sometimes aromatherapy can be used by adding few drops of essential oils in to the bath top full of warm water and staying soaked in there for a while for example if one like to go and face the day the require lots of energy it will be good to add few drops of Black paper and juniper in the water (6-10 drops) it has very uplifting affect. At night for relaxing and have a good night sleep you can use 2 part chamomile,2 part lavender and 2 part roses. Another way of using aromatherapy is adding the essential oil or the leaves in to the steaming water for example one can used lavender to relive anxiety by  having few drops in to a bowel od steaming water and have a towel over your head  so you can trap the steam and inhale 10-15 minutes. It is also great way of using essential oils that are good for completions that way.

Chiropractic Adjustments, comment

May 12, 2011

I totally disagree with Agency for Health Care Policy and Research. There are other drugless treatments available for the initial pain in the low back. They include massage therapy, hydrotherapy, wax therapy, and exercise therapy. The list can go on further. I would dare say that massage therapy is used more than chiropractic adjustments for initial low back pain within the United States. If anyone has research to prove me wrong, please show me.

Chiropractic Adjustments
With approximately 15 million patients annually, chiropractic is now America’s second largest health care system. Translating to “done with the hands,” chiropractic therapy uses physical manipulation of the spine and joints to relieve pain, decompress nerves and return positive energy to the body. Chiropractic adjustments help prevent wear and tear of the joints by maintaining their proper positioning and decreases scar tissue formation after injury. The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research endorses chiropractic therapy as the only, safe and effective, drugless form of initial treatment for low back pain. Because the spinal column acts like a switchboard for the nervous system, proper alignment is essential for good health.

A Great Change

May 10, 2011

Guest post written by Chris Farson

Moving to South Virgina was a difficult change for my family. My wife has lived in one state her whole life and my kids are pretty young and had to leave their friends and the area they grew up in. We came down here because my mother and father are from this state. Now that they are a little older, they have had some health issues and I need to be closer to them so that I can help them out. They have been the best parents a guy could ask for, and they were always there for me. The least I can do is be closer to them.

I’ve already helped them with a few things. The other day I took my dad to get a free hearing test in a Virginia MiracleEar center. I helped my mother get to an annual doctor’s appointment, and I helped both of them move some things out of their home. While I know that I did the right thing, I hope my family learns to love this state. It’s going to be a big change, but I think it will be for the best.

Detoxification, comment

April 6, 2011

I use massage therapy to assist with a detoxification process. This combination is enjoyed and useful by many of my clients. What type of water flush is to be used in the article Detoxification, comment is my question. I use water in multiple sessions for the colon flush, oral/gastrointestinal flush, and/or external skin flush in a shower.

I agree that we need to focus on lymph and blood also, not just the liver and colon. There are several ways to accomplish this such as massage therapy with large water flush afterwards to help with the toxins that are mobilized during the massage. There are also many botanicals that work on restoring/cleaning the blood. Even yet another way that is commonly forgotten is through the skin. I always become alarmed when someone tells me they don’t sweat much anymore. I get this mental image that everything is blocked up inside not just pores. I always tell them they need to promote sweating to help rid themselves of toxins, especially plastic and dioxins that build up so much from our environment. I further recommend that they first off stop using anti-perspirants that stop this process. I also recommend they try botanicals and hydrotherapy that promote diuresis and diaphoresis like dandelion and nettles and increase their water intake tremendously. If that does do enough there is the far infrared sauna with high temperatures that can be tolerated by even clients with lung and heart disease and promote the removal of many toxins. Of course we are not to forget ways to rid our bodies of heavy metals that can build up and cause illness like the use of increased fiber to decrease transit time in the gut and chelating agents both orally (if not severe or IV EDTA for those with severe heavy metal poisoning. All in all, detoxification warrants our attention to assure our bodies are functioning at optimal levels and to prevent future illness with the ever increasing toxic load from our environment.

Title: Detoxification
Detoxification refers to the elimination of poisons or toxins. Detoxification programs include a vast variety of treatments aimed at getting rid of body toxins and improving health. Many organs in the body such as liver, lungs, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, and skin all work to eliminate toxins that we take in. These organs detoxify toxins in a perfect manner. However, the huge amounts of today’s environmental contaminants attacking the immune system and it would be too tough to challenge for these detoxifying organs to eliminate the toxins and do their jobs. The toxins remain in our bodies and accumulating each day.

When the food we eat and the water we drink leave the stomach, they enter the small intestine where they mix with digestive enzymes. These enzymes break down the food’s fats, proteins, and carbohydrates into simple compounds. Some of these simple compounds go to the liver to be metabolized. Others are carried away by the lymph, an important part of the immune system. What’s left travels on through the large intestine, or colon, where water is removed and bowel movements are formed.

But if toxins in the food we eat and the water we drink cannot be destroyed by the digestive enzymes, or detoxified by the liver, or eliminated by the immune system, they begin to build up. As these toxins accumulate, they will affect every part of our body: slow our metabolism, rob us of energy, reduce our immunity, and can even lead to serious chronic illness. Therefore, the body needs a serious method of cleansing system.

Most detoxification supplements focus only on the liver and colon. That’s because significant amounts of our body’s own detoxification method happens in these important digestive organs. However, the only way to make sure that detoxification is truly successful, is to cleanse the whole body. Therefore, the detoxification of the blood and lymph considered very important. These two organs considered very important in nourish and protect the liver, colon, and every other organ, tissue, and cell. If toxins are present in blood or lymph, every organ, tissue, and cell will be exposed to these toxins and contaminants, too.

Detoxifying the colon and liver without cleansing the blood and lymph is considered nearly nothing. Therefore, in order to have the best result for detoxification program both organs and the blood and the lymph system must be in attention for detoxification plan. In this way we expect that the body working in its best performance.

The Fate of Naturopathic Medicine, comment

April 6, 2011

I think people should also be free to choose massage therapist as one of the available healthcare providers. It is important for us to work with medical doctors, chiropractors and others. I work with medical doctors and chiropractors. My services are then covered by insurance, the client’s deductible, and the client’s copay. Some insurance companies to do cover massage therapy, but their client want it. The massage therapy coverage should be an option in all medical and health insurance. As long as the massage therapist is certified, the insurance companies do not need to worry about quality. There are some of us who are not certified, but working on certification. These therapists still provide quality massages.

Title: The Fate of Naturopathic Medicine, comment

Well, I guess it has begun or for some it continues to worsen. The Constitution was signed to provide us with many freedoms. One of those was supposed to be the freedom to make our own medical choices. We don’t have that in this country anymore. If we don’t go along with the “medical mafia” (as my father fondly refers to them) and pharmaceutical companies and their plan for our health care, we have to pay for everything out-of-pocket.
The health savings account (HSA), flexible spending accounts (FSA) were originally a way that many alternative medicines and practices could be covered under our health insurance via our employer. Now, as of January 1, 2011, you must go to your “approved health care provider” (HCP) and get prescriptions for any herbals or supplements you may be using to treat illness and medical problems. You must also pay for these items in advance and go through the time and paperwork and expense of seeing your approved HCP to get such items. Then, after all of that, some bureaucrat with the government and/or your insurance company decides whether or not this expense will be approved. I currently have botanical meds, supplements, dental work, and other medical bills (preventative medicine) pending approval before my employer health benefit bank (HSA, FSA) (excess of $2,300.00) will release the funds to pay for these.

I do understand the need to protect the public from unsafe practices and practitioners out there, but there has to be a better way to allow people to choose their own health care whether it be traditional medicine, acupuncture and TCM, naturopathic medicine, homeopathic medicine or even a shaman or folk healer. Why can there not be designated experts in these areas to help keep the public safe while still allowing them to make their own decisions about how to care for their own bodies. We have rights to our bodies when we want to choose to terminate a life inside of us, but are losing our rights at an alarming rate to prevent illness and restore health in our bodies. (p.s. my father is now 80 years old, in excellent health and on no synthetic meds, he eats natural whole foods, does not smoke, likes an occasion beer or glass of wine and still enjoys operating his farm and carpentry.)

Title: The Fate of Naturopathic Medicine
With all the buzz around about President Obama’s healthcare plan, how will this impact Naturopathic medicine and better yet, will there still be such a thin as a health savings account?

Currently, in regards to healthcare in this country, the only way I could benefit from by employers healthcare benefit for me was to have a high deductible insurance plan that would cover me in the event of a catastrophic illness or accident and adding a health savings account. Since I do not use traditional medicine very often, the high deductible insurance with it’s low monthly cost can provide some coverage for me if needed. I added a health savings account which I contribute fifty dollar to each month that is matched by my employer. They also started me off with one thousand dollars to be used over the first year until I could accrue more money on my own to offset the cost of doctor visits, hospital costs, vision and dental exams and prescription drugs, etc. I was able to use this money to cover the cost of thing that I use for medical treatment such as chiropractic adjustments, medical massage, nutritional supplements and even most of the bulk herbs I use.

This has worked out very well me myself and my family over the past few years. What will happen when Obama’s healthcare plan goes into effect. I fear that not only will I being paying for healthcare I might rarely be able to use, but also paying more as a nurse who currently is being considered high risk on the plan and more money will be taken from my paycheck. Also as a hospice nurse, currently, Obama’s plan is to either drastically cut the hospice benefit or possibly eliminate it all together. My field of nursing may also be eliminated.

The US Constitution promised us many freedoms. Many of these freedoms have been amended to suit the government and not the people. Certainly, the freedom to chose our own form of healthcare has not been provided for fairly in the past and it seems now will be restricted even more. Are there any thoughts on a course of action to help people who choose a more natural approach to medical care?
