Massage and Physical Therapy combined

January 22, 2012

One way to increase employment opportunities, is by combining Massage Therapy training with Physical Therapy training. There is some overlap, which makes it easier to learn both disciplines. Massage Therapy students do not need to be college students (in some cases they do not need to be high school graduates). Physical Therapy students are college students.

Students can learn to become Physical Therapy aides or assistants. This is ideal for those who do not want to spend years becoming a Physical Therapist.

Room air germ killers, comment

December 5, 2011

You are correct in wanting to stop and prevent the spread of the cold and flu viruses. There is a better method than using Lysol®. Aromatherapy is a much better method, where the client is not exposed to harmful chemicals.

Room air germ killers

November 17, 2011

This may not be the correct blog. But I have some questions. How many massage therapists use Lysol(r) spray or a similar product? Should these products be used especially during the cold and flu season? How effective are these germ killers?

Thank you for your time.

Be Careful with Chest Pain

September 29, 2011

There are various reasons why people have chest pains. Chest pain has many possible causes. If chest pain is occurring, it is necessary for the massage therapy client to seek medical attention.

The leading causes of chest pain, relating to cardiac, are heart attack, angina, aortic dissection, coronary spasm, and pericarditis. However, other factors may cause heart pain, such as myocarditis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, digestive disorders, musculoskeletal problems, respiratory illnesses, and even panic attacks, shingles, and cancer.

Heart attacks are caused when a blood clot is blocking blood flow to the heart muscle. Angina, is hard, thick, cholesterol-containing plaques that gradually build up on the inner walls of the artieries that carry blood to the heart. These plaques narrow the arteries and restrict blood supply, usually during stenuous activity. Aortic dissection is a life threatening conditon involving main areteries leading from the heart, or aorta. The inner layers of the blood vessels separate, forcing blood flow between them. Usually caused by sharp blow to the chest or from uncontrolled hypertension. Coronary spasms can occur when arteries that supply blood to the heart go into spasms, temorarily stopping blood flow. Usually caused by a co-existing coronary artery disease. Pericarditis, is and inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart, usually due to a viral infection. Myocarditis, is an inflammation of the heart caused by a viral infection. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a heart muscle disorder.

Digestive disorders can also cause chest pain. Heartburn, is caused by stomach acid washing up from the stomach into the espophagus. Esophageal spasms occur when the tube from the throat to the stomach make it difficult or painful to swallow. Hiatal herias, Achalasia, a swallowing disorder, and gallbladder or pancreatic problems, can also cause chest pain.

Musculoskeletal causes of chest pain can be costochondritis-where the cartilage of the rib cage become inflamed. Sore muscles, injured ribs, pinched nerves, these can also be causes.

Respiratory causes for chest pain can be due to Pulmonary embolism, pleurisy, and any other lung disorders, such as pneumothorax, pulmonary hypertension, or asthma.

Other causes can be panic attack, single infections and certain cancers.

Whatever the cause of chest pain, it is always best to have your client seek the help of a medical professional. The doctor or cardiologist will be the best judge of the underlying cause of the chest pain. Through cardiac testing and techniques, the cause can be explained, and then properly treated.

Kinesiology

September 22, 2011

Kinesiology is study of the movements. Some kinesiologists work with massage therapists. In 196o’s, Dr. Goodheart made an observation that a weak muscle could be treated and the strength can be improved, Kinesiology incorporates the principles of variety of holistic therapy, including chiropractic, acupuncture, manipulation of spine and extremity and cranial bones. Kinesiology studies muscle strength to health and find out that some factors do affect the muscles negatively, once corrected it will correct the weakness. Kinesiology does apply motion, there are currently schools that teach the method OF Kinesiology and one can get degree on study of the movement from BS to PHD. There are many different form of kinesiology from behavior kinesiology to many different forms. These include exercise and sport biomechanics, physiology, biochemistry and motor behavior; measurement; physical fitness; and sports medicine etc.. etc..

Mechanotherapy

September 6, 2011

Mechanotherapy is used for strengthening muscles, improvement of coordination and correction of movement patterns. The term mechanotherapy refers to the process of how load may be used therapeutically to stimulate tissue repair and remodeling in tendon, muscle, cartilage and bone. Common problems such as tendinopathies, muscle tears, and fractures require controlled loading to institute healing and return to function.

The scientific underpinning of how this occurs is related to “mechanotransduction”, which refers to a physiological process where cells sense and respond to mechanical loads. Exercise therapy as well as various manual therapies apply load to tissues with the goal of promoting healing. The underlying processes surrounding the effects of these therapies are poorly understood for many clinicians. Understanding the underlying physiological process behind many of our common therapies is necessary for treatment planning, therapist and patient education.

In this method of treatment the therapist will apply exactly estimate quality of motion on joints. The specific tools help to select the separate phases of free motions to support and fix desired joint. Designed apparatus helps to measure out the mechanical loading at implementation of motions and exercises during training.

Motions could be passive or active. Passive action is when motions of a patient are carried out by the therapist which facilitates motions. Active action is when a patient leads into action his muscle apparatus by efforts.

Loading on a joint and muscular group is graduated at a change of load weight and its position on a barbell, angle, in which the pendulum is set, frequency of the forced vibrations, and duration of the procedure. Also except the variety of mechanotherapeutic apparatus, for exercises different facilities are used, such as gymnastic sticks, Swedish walls and others. Many patients with different supports in rehabilitation departments of neurological, rheumatological, ortopedo-traumatology can have benefits from this system.

Improvements can measure by walks distance, range of motion, degree of pain, and flexibility or extensibility of the joint.

Cancer and Massage

August 24, 2011

I am one of the therapists who use to be fearful of working with cancer clients. Since I took Dr. Johnson’s online course, I am no longer afraid. I realized other therapists, clients, family members, and healthcare professionals had a fear of cancer clients taking massage therapy.

I learned that massage actually benefits cancer client. We as therapist can teach family members some basic techniques and this helps them with their fears and assist them in providing compassion to their loved one.

We can also teach clients to feel better with self-massage.

Finally, a big shock to me was that we can teach healthcare professional about the benefits of massage. And thereby allow prescriptions for massage clients.

In our class, we used Mosby’s Pathology for Massage Therapist by Susan G. Salvo.

Knots in my back

August 12, 2011

I am glad the therapist help me to reduced the knots in my lower back. I had been lifting heavy loads on at work. Walking was painful for me, which lead me to lean toward one side. My colleagues at work noticed my pain and leaning. The therapist had me to push with my legs. Immediately I felt some of the pain going way. The therapist also gave me a massage. This also helped a lot. This is my experience with getting relief from the painful knots in my back.

Child Abuse

August 5, 2011

Experts cannot agree on a single reason for this increase, but most attribute it to both a population increase and an increase in reporting. Other factors that are sometimes cited include changing a wider definition of child abuse, increased reporting requirements, states providing more accurate information, better recording systems, and changes in data collections.
It is estimated that about 906,000 children are victims of abuse & neglect every year. That estimate translates roughly to an astonishing rate of 12.3 children per 1,000 children. Of the victimized children, it is the ages 0-3 that are the most likely to experience abuse. About 1 in 50 U.S. infants are victims of nonfatal child abuse or neglect in a year, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. To further the shock, it is estimated that of these 1,500 abused and neglected children will result in death. That is just over 4 fatalities every day! The CDC goes onto report that 79% of the child mortality rate from abuse, are younger than 4 years of age.
As a psychologist who has worked with abused children, I can say that first and foremost, a child should never be flat-out confronted if you suspect abuse. This should be handled very delicately and the child should be approached gently, with all efforts being made to ensure the feeling of safety, security and trust. The child will most likely be frightened, embarrassed, ashamed, feeling guilty or conflicted and going through many emotions that are hard for them to handle.
If you suspect child abuse has occurred, you should contact the local child protection agency or police department. Now-a-day, there are many national organizations that you can call who will help guide you through. One organization is called Child Help USA and they have a hotline that is available 24 hours a day to offer assistance.
For the treatment of anxiety resulting from abuse and neglect, there are several roads you can choose from. Symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder may include restlessness, feeling tense or on edge, irritability, impatience, or poor concentration. People may also notice changes in their physical health such as headaches, jaw pain, muscle tension, difficulty falling or staying asleep (insomnia), dry mouth, fatigue, chest tightness, indigestion, bloating, excessive sweating, and headache. These are some of the natural remedies that are being explored for anxiety:
The herb passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) was used as a folk remedy for anxiety and insomnia. Side effects of passionflower may include nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, and rapid heartbeat. The safety of passionflower in pregnant or nursing women, children, or people with kidney or liver disease has not been established.
Massage therapy, shiatsu, and other forms of bodywork are widely used to diminish muscle tension, relieve stress, and improve sleep.
Mind/body breathing exercises, physical exercise, yoga, tai chi, self-hypnosis, meditation, and biofeedback are just some of the stress reduction techniques used for anxiety.
GABA is an amino acid that is known to play a role in the physiology of anxiety. Some prescription drugs for anxiety work by affecting GABA receptors in the brain. The degree to which orally ingested GABA supplements can reach the brain, however, is unknown.
Plant essential oils can be added to baths, massage oil, or infusers. Essential oils that are used for anxiety and nervous tension are: bergamot, cypress, geranium, jasmine, lavender, melissa, neroli, rose, sandalwood, ylang-ylang. Lavender is the most common and forms the base of many relaxing blends.

Reduce our national debt by reducing the federal electronic medical records mandate, comment

July 29, 2011

As a full time massage therapist, I am seeing more people under stress because of the uncertainty of the USA budget, finances, credit, and inability to pay. These people under stress are ordinary citizens and politicians. My heart goes out to both groups of people.

I do not understand how the politicians and the President can force the health care industry to spend money on federally mandated electronic medical records. This sadness occurs especially when our US government is requiring specific types of overbearing electronic medical records and it cannot balance its own budget.
