When I was in high school I volunteered at a nursing home program called Day Away. It was a place for adults to come during the day. One of the ladies I spent time with was suffering from dementia. She was always very anxious and paced around the room. The nurses in the center would have me give her hand massages with lotion. It was one of the few times she would sit quietly for an extended period of time. While still a little anxious, her anxiety level did seem to decrease. Dementia is a scary disease for the sufferers; while words often cannot ease them of their fears, some do seem to respond well to pleasant physical touch, such as a hand massage.
