Mac Tutoring Classes Online for Seniors and Others, comment

March 27, 2012

We treat many seniors at our massage therapy suite. Some of the seniors have been with us for several years. And we have noticed for a few that their brain functions have been slowly deteriorating. Massage does help the brain function some. But these senior need more. The online Mac computer classes mentioned is a good start. We will definitely recommend for some of our seniors to take the classes.

Do not forget that seniors and everybody need muscle exercise also. No one should sit or stand in front of a computer for long periods of time. The combination of brain and muscle exercises should help each one of our seniors live a more rewarding and fulfilling life.

Endangerment Sites

March 14, 2012

We are using Mosby’s Pathology for Massage Therapists, 2nd Edition by Susan G. Salvo. I really like the Appendix B, Endangerment Sites. We were not assigned to read it in our class. But, I find it very helpful to beware of places on the body where massage should be used with caution.

I was massaging a client in the popliteal area, and the client moved as in pain. It was a good thing I was massaging gently. The client told me he is very sensitive at his right common peroneal nerve. And he was appreciative that I started with gentle strokes in that area.

Massage and Physical Therapy combined

January 22, 2012

One way to increase employment opportunities, is by combining Massage Therapy training with Physical Therapy training. There is some overlap, which makes it easier to learn both disciplines. Massage Therapy students do not need to be college students (in some cases they do not need to be high school graduates). Physical Therapy students are college students.

Students can learn to become Physical Therapy aides or assistants. This is ideal for those who do not want to spend years becoming a Physical Therapist.

Types of Diseases

December 14, 2009

I really hadn’t considered the different ways to categorize diseases or disorders. Though the “House” program is far from reality, it does allow me to see how these categories are used when determining a diagnosis. The categories that catch my attention the most are of course the communicable and noncommunicable for health consideration both to/from client/therapist.

Chapter Two

October 9, 2009

Review of Mosby’s Pathology for Massage Therapists, by Salvo and Anderson. Under the class of Dr. Johnson.

In chapter 2 it discusses client assessment and intake forms. It is very important to have intake forms however clients don’t always write all of their important health information. So it is very important to verbally ask health questions. I have experienced a client who had severe poor circulation on his feet and lower legs due to diabetes which were a bluish/purple color yet he failed to mention it when asked about his health. I was not informed of it until I uncovered his leg and noticed the change of color. I ended up avoiding the whole bottom leg region and massaged with very light pressure. So good communication with the client is very important.

Health Assessment

October 9, 2009

Review of Mosby’s Pathology for Massage Therapists, by Salvo and Anderson. Class taught by Dr. Johnson.

I loved how after reading about how to look for certain skin or muscle conditions, the book then tells you what massage techniques to use on the client… I feel better prepared to assess my clients and come up with a specific treatment plan for each one of them…

Infection Control

October 9, 2009

Review of Mosby’s Pathology for Massage Therapists, by Salvo and Anderson.

This chapter I read within Dr. Johnson’s class gave me a better understanding of which diseases are contagious, what types of skin abnormalities I should avoid, and though the pictures were hard for me to look at, I feel better prepared in the instance I have a client with any of disease. I look forward to learning more about each disease and if massage is contraindicated or not.

Chapter One

October 7, 2009

Review of Mosby’s Pathology for Massage Therapists, by Salvo and Anderson. Within Dr. Johnson’s course.

The information on different skin diseases in chapter one is very interesting. As a massage student, I feel it is very important that I understand and am able to tell the differences of diseases to protect myself and my clients from spreading them. The sanitary practice of hand washing is important so as to not spread infection from the therapist to the client or vise versa, client to the therapist.

Dizziness, tremors, etc.

October 5, 2009

A little confused about chapter 5 of our textbook in Dr. Johnson’s class. A paragraph in this chapter tells the massage therapist to refer the client to their health care provider if they have dizziness, tremors, etc… First, do they mean if the client experiences these things during massage? Or if they have these symptoms in general? And if its the latter, is massage contraindicated? Anybody know?
